HP-1 Ingredients Explained in detail: The Science Behind Focus, Energy & Performance

In designing HP-1®, we selected a targeted blend of nutrients and botanicals to support sharpened focus, elevated energy, and physical performance. Below we break down the key ingredients on the label and explain the scientific rationale behind each with peer-reviewed references so you can see what the research says. As part of our research partnership with Coventry University, have confirmed the efficacy of the formula and will use the on-going research to underpin future product development.

1. Creatine Monohydrate – More Than Just Strength

What it does:

Creatine is widely known for its ability to enhance muscular power, strength, and recovery by increasing phosphocreatine stores in muscle tissue — supporting rapid ATP regeneration. However, recent research also highlights its role in brain energy metabolism and cognitive performance, particularly under stress or fatigue.

Creatine and cognition:

The brain consumes substantial energy (around 20% of the body’s ATP). Creatine plays a critical role in maintaining ATP availability in neurons, supporting mental clarity, reaction time, and resilience under sleep deprivation or mental load.

Even low doses of creatine monohydrate (0.03–0.1 g/kg, or ~2–7 g/day) have been shown to benefit cognitive function in specific conditions such as sleep deprivation, oxygen deprivation, and vegetarian diets (which are typically lower in creatine).

What the research says:

A double-blind trial showed creatine supplementation improved working memory and intelligence tasks after short-term use in young adults. Rae C et al. (2003). Proc Biol Sci, 270(1529), 2147-2150.

A systematic review concluded that creatine supports cognitive function in situations of high energy demand, such as stress, sleep deprivation, or hypoxia. Avgerinos et al., 2018, Exp Gerontol

A 2021 review emphasized creatine’s neuroprotective potential, supporting mitochondrial health and cerebral energy metabolism. Allen et al., 2021 https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychiatry/articles/10.3389/fpsyt.2025.1667639/full

Why it’s in HP-1®:

HP-1® delivers creatine in a low, daily-support dose ideal for cognitive support without requiring loading phases. It’s part of the “everyday performance” foundation, contributing to both physical ATP energy and mental energy metabolism.

2. Caffeine (150 mg)

Caffeine is one of the world’s most-widely studied stimulants for energy, alertness and performance. On the brain side, it blocks adenosine receptors which helps reduce fatigue and increases alertness.

For example, caffeine has been shown to improve reaction time, vigilance and attention in waking subjects.

When paired with appropriate nutrients, the benefit can be enhanced.

Why it’s in HP-1®

With 150 mg per serving, this provides a robust but moderate stimulation —enough to raise alertness and support focus without pushing into overly high doses (especially for habitual users). Paired with other ingredients, it supports the “active mental edge” that HP-1® aims to deliver.

What the research says

The combination of caffeine + theanine shows improved attention switching and reduced distractibility compared to caffeine alone.

A review describes caffeine’s effects on alertness and cognitive performance, emphasising dosage and timing.

For physical tasks, caffeine is a proven ergogenic aid under many conditions.

Practical tip

Take HP-1® about 30–60 minutes before a mentally or physically demanding session. If you’re caffeine-sensitive (for example, sleep is affected), avoid using it at night.

3. L-Theanine (25 mg)

L-Theanine is an amino acid found naturally in green tea and some other plant sources. It is used in conjunction with caffeine to provide what is often described as a “calm focus” enhancing attention while moderating overstimulation.

Why it’s in HP-1®

The dose (25 mg) pairs with caffeine to soften the edges of stimulation reducing jitteriness, sharpening attention switching and supporting mental clarity. This helps HP-1® deliver focus that feels alert but controlled rather than wired.

What the research says

In a key study: Caffeine plus theanine improved speed & accuracy on attention switching tasks and reduced vulnerability to distracting information.  PubMed

A meta-analysis found that caffeine plus theanine had standardised mean differences (SMD) of 0.39-0.54 for alertness and 0.29-0.38 for attention-switching accuracy vs placebo. BioMed Central

The 2024 review states the combination may allow lower caffeine doses to deliver similar cognitive benefit, possibly improving sustained attention.  memphis.edu

Practical tip

While the research often uses higher theanine doses (100-200 mg) than found in HP-1®’s, the inclusion still supports synergy with caffeine.

4. Choline (50 mg)

Choline is the precursor to acetylcholine, a key neurotransmitter involved in memory, attention and neuromuscular function. Adequate choline supports cholinergic signalling, which has relevance for both cognitive and physical performance.

Why it’s in HP-1®

By including choline (50 mg), HP-1® supports the brain’s cholinergic pathways helping attention, focus and neuromuscular function (especially important in performance contexts). It bolsters the “mental engine” alongside caffeine and theanine.

What the research says

In an article reviewing dietary ingredients for optimising cognition, choline is listed alongside other nootropic nutrients like creatine, Bacopa monnieri and Ginkgo biloba for its role in cognitive function.  Liebert Publications

Practical tip

Choline works best when the broader nutritional status is adequate e.g., sufficient B-vitamins, healthy diet. As with all cognitive mental-focus ingredients, expect incremental support rather than dramatic overnight effects.

5. Betaine HCl (50 mg)

Betaine also called trimethylglycine has dual role as an osmolyte supporting cell hydration and a methyl donor. In athletic contexts, betaine has been studied for strength, power and endurance performance.

Why it’s in HP-1®

Here, 50 mg of betaine supports hydration, cellular volume important for muscle & nerve performance and methyl-based metabolic pathways rounding out the “physical performance” half of the formula alongside mental focus.

What the research says

While many betaine studies use higher doses the inclusion of 50 mg in HP-1® helps support the comprehensive support matrix.

The role of methyl donors like betaine supports neuro-metabolism and neurotransmitter synthesis indirectly, adding to the cognitive side.

Practical tip

Betaine’s effects in performance require consistency; however, in a combined formula like HP-1®, it supports acute sessions by helping maintain hydration, cell volume and metabolic readiness.

6. Iodine (25 µg)

Iodine is an essential trace element, critical for thyroid hormone production. Normal thyroid function underpins energy metabolism, mood, cognitive clarity and overall metabolic rate.

Why it’s in HP-1®

Including 25 µg iodine helps ensure thyroid-metabolic support is not a weak link in the performance chain.

What the research says

Thyroid hormones regulate basal metabolic rate, central nervous system activity and peripheral energy usage.

Ensuring adequate iodine means the “engine” (thyroid) is well-supported, allowing stimulants like caffeine and focus nutrients to act on a well-tuned system.

Practical tip

HP-1®’s dose helps fill potential gaps but should be part of an overall diet rich in iodine (sea-vegetables, fish, dairy) and balanced thyroid-support nutrients (selenium, zinc).

7. L-Theanine, Bacopa monnieri (25 mg), Ginkgo biloba (25 mg) — Botanical nootropics

These three botanicals form the “smart-focus herbals” arm of HP-1®’s formula. Together they support cognitive resilience, attention-switching, neuroprotection and mental clarity.

Bacopa monnieri

A standardised extract of Bacopa has shown cognitive-enhancing potential via antioxidant, mitochondrial and anti-inflammatory pathways. A 2008 human trial found benefits for older adults. PMC

A 2024 systematic review highlights Bacopa’s neuroprotective and cognitive-enhancement potential. MDPI

Ginkgo biloba

Ginkgo is widely studied, with some results indicating that the antioxidant and micro-circulatory support of Ginkgo may support cognitive endurance (especially under stress). https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1878747923018123

Synergistic rationale, inclusion in a combined multi-ingredient matrix (as in HP-1®) may enhance overall effect through multiple pathways (neuro-transmission, circulation, mitochondrial support, stress resilience).

A review of nutrients & phytonutrients concluded that many of these botanicals may improve memory/attention, but with variable effect sizes and subject populations. PMC

Practical tip

Botanical nootropics often show more benefit with consistent use (several weeks) rather than a single acute dose. In HP-1®, their inclusion supports both acute focus via caffeine + theanine and ongoing neuro-metabolic resilience.

8. B-Vitamins (Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin B6, Pantothenic Acid (B5), Vitamin B12) + Black Pepper (Piper nigrum)

These supporting nutrients are included to ensure optimal performance and absorption.

B-Vitamins: Key in energy metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis (dopamine, acetylcholine, noradrenaline), and methylation pathways.

Vitamin C & E: Powerful antioxidant partners help protect neural tissue from oxidative stress, support performance under load/strain.

Black Pepper: Included at ~5 mg to support bioavailability of botanical extracts (via piperine enhancing absorption).

Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5): Required for coenzyme A synthesis critical in energy and neurotransmitter metabolism.

Why it’s in HP-1®

These nutrients ensure that the “primary” focus and performance ingredients have a supportive metabolic foundation. Think of them as the organisational support enabling the “go-engine” to run at full readiness.

What the research says

A review of cognitive supplement ingredients lists vitamins such as B12 and combinations with botanicals as candidate supports for cognitive function. Liebert Publications

The broader point: no ingredient acts in isolation neurotransmission, energy metabolism, antioxidant protection and cerebral circulation all interplay in mental & physical performance.
